How to Greet According to Time in English

In every language there are a lot of greeting sentences. Some of them are those which you can use anytime and some others can be used in some certain time. We are listing the expressions of greeting in English related to time here.

Greeting in the Morning

Morning time means the time between the hours from 5am to 12 pm. People wake up and have their breakfast in this time. And they go to work. Morning time is the beginning of the day.

When you wake up in the morning, you see your family and say them a happy “Good Morning”. Good morning can be used in the morning formally and informally. It means;

  • You can say Good Morning to everything.
  • It’s not important whether the people who you say “Good Morning” to are close to you or not.

Morning

You can say only “Morning” instead of “Good Morning”. But don’t forget that you can only use it informally. It means you can say “Morning” to your friend, family, etc who you are close to.

  • You can say “Morning” to your friend, family, etc.
    • But you can NOT say “Morning” to people who you are not close to. For example your boss, a doctor, etc.

Good Morrow

Another greeting phrase is “Good Morrow”. It is also an informal phrase used in the morning.

  • You can say “Good Morrow” to your friend, family, etc.
    • However do NOT say “Good Morrow” to people who you are not close to. For example your boss, a doctor, etc.

Greeting in the Afternoon

Afternoon time is the time between 12pm and 5 pm hours. In this time, people usually work. So it’s the most busiest time of the day. There is only one greeting phrase related to this time. And it’s used only formally because of this business time.

Good Afternoon

Good afternoon is the only greeting phrase (according to time) you can say in the afternoon.

Greeting in the Evening

eveningEvening time is the time between 5pm and 9pm hours. People generally go home, eat dinner and have a rest in the evening. They spend time with their family, watch television and listen to music.

Good Evening

You can say “Good Evening” when you want to greet people in the evening. It’s not important whether they are close to you or not.

Greeting at Night

nightNight is the time between 9pm and 5am hours. People usually sleep in this time.

  • Do NOT use “Good Night” when you see your friends or anybody at night. Because “Good Night” can be used only if you want to say “Good Bye”. If you want to greet at night, you can say “Hello”. anytimeRegardless of time, you can use some greeting phrases. It’s not important whether the time is morning, afternoon, evening or night.

Hello

Hello is one of the most-used greeting phrases. You can say “Hello” at anytime to anyone.
